Membership Overview

Our Organization

Originally founded in 1927, The Society of Typographic Arts is experiencing dramatic new growth and offers an ambitious, exciting programming calendar bolstered by an energetic board of directors. Historically, both STA and Chicago have played an influential role in American graphic design. Chicago is, and always been, an international design powerhouse.

A design organization made up of Chicago based designers, the STA strives to incorporate interesting events to get us all connected.

Our annual winter conference provides members with a forum for delivering a presentation on a subject of their choice. The weekend is filled with a series of short talks by some of the most accomplished, well-informed, well-read, intelligent, inspirational people in our business.

One of the most exciting projects we launched is the STA Chicago Archive Competition. The STA has established the Chicago Design Archive to record significant work. This archive was the first of its kind in the nation and was concepted and created by Wayne Stuetzer, Jack Weiss and Ron Kovach. The Archive contains a comprehensive record of the finest work ever created by Chicago designers.

In conjunction with the Archive, we host an annual STA Chicago Design Archive Event, which began in 2005. The competition is open only to Chicago area designers. (Cook, Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage, DeKalb, Kendall and Will counties). All the selected designs become a permanent part of the STA Chicago Design Archive collection.

If you have any questions or suggestions, contact me by email. Or, if you want to get actively involved, let me know. And, by the way…if you are not already a member, we invite you to join us.
